Comparing Three Philosophies of Education What is education? Education can be defined in one of four ways: 1. The activity of education carried on by teachers, schools and parents (or by oneself). 2. The process of being educated (or learning) which goes on in the student. 3. The result of numbers one and two. 4. The discipline or field of inquiry that studies or reflects on one, two and three and is taught in schools of education. Education is concerned with the cultivation of the inner resources of individual persons. At its best, it is always an informal, largely unstructured and even an unsystematic process, but the reality of education today is more concerned with examination success, which in turn leads to a spiritless†¦show more content†¦Aristotle believes that the task of education is lost without happiness. Excellence of activity is the way to becoming wholly educated. Aristotle believes that he can lay down a number of specific principles for the guidance of educators and legislators. He says that citizens and non-citizens should receive different educations, since their capacities and functions are different; the education of citizens should be liberal, while that of non-citizens should be vocational. Citizens must be trained to both obey and rule, since they will have to take their turns at ruling and being ruled; non-citizens must be taught to obey, but with a somewhat different kind of obedience. Education must prepare citizens for both actions and leisure. By action, Aristotle means all forms of doing, including moral, military, and political action. By leisure, he means not free time filled with amusement, recreation, or inactivity, but free time filled with intellectually excellent activity, especially contemplation. The citizen must be provided with the knowledge, abilities, and skills needed for action, but since action is for the sake of leisure, he must be even more prepared for leisure.
